18 new journalists each year gain international experience through the OPC Foundation Scholar Awards.
Over 400 alumni have launched their careers through our programs, many now leading reporters and editors at Reuters, The Associated Press, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg,The New York Times and other top media outlets.
40+ international bureaus have hosted OPCF Fellows, providing hands-on experience in global reporting.

Scholar Awards in Action
Each spring, the OPC Foundation brings together the Scholar Award winners, journalists, editors and supporters in New York for a two-day program celebrating and supporting the next generation of international correspondents.
The program begins with the Scholar Awards reception, where scholars, journalists, supporters and friends of the Foundation gather to celebrate the achievements of the newest class of emerging international journalists.
The following day, scholars take part in a full day of training, mentoring and networking, with sessions led by experienced journalists and editors. The program offers practical guidance, candid conversations about navigating the profession, and opportunities to build relationships with journalists and mentors.
Later in the spring and summer, our fellowship recipients embark on their international placements, gaining hands-on experience in news bureaus around the world and reporting from some of the most important regions and communities in the world.
Partnerships make this experience possible — from celebrating these emerging journalists to providing the training, mentorship and professional opportunities that help launch their careers.

The Impact of Our Partnerships
Catherine Cartier ‘24
Catherine reported on finance, energy, and the Gulf region during her OPC Foundation Reuters fellowship in Dubai. The experience strengthened her confidence to pursue ambitious stories. She is working now as a journalist for Reuters in Beirut.

Youcef Bounab ’23
Youcef reported for the Associated Press in Paris during his OPC Foundation fellowship, covering everything from government officials to the Paris Olympic committee. The experience launched his international reporting career. He is now Agence France-Presse’s Maghreb correspondent, based in Tunisia.“The OPC Foundation opened the door to my career in international journalism. I’ll always be grateful for that opportunity.”
Brett Simpson ‘21
Brett’s OPC Foundation funded reporting in the Norwegian Arctic led to a National Geographic feature and launched her career as a freelance international journalist. She now lives in the Arctic, reporting on climate, energy, and human rights.

Stephen’s OPC award funded his first summer at Reuters, opening the door to a decade-long career reporting from Lebanon, Egypt, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia.
