Journalism lost one of its greats when Rob Urban, a leading journalist in the Central and Eastern European region throughout the 1990s, passed away suddenly last year. Rob was a mentor to many journalists across the former East bloc. To tie his name to an Award for reporting in Central and Eastern Europe is the best way his family together with OPC Foundation will keep his spirit alive and support future generations of journalists.
Starting in 2025, The Rob Urban Award will provide an annual scholarship, fellowship or reporting grant to an OPC Foundation fellow focusing on Central and Eastern Europe Reporting.

Our program is aimed primarily at helping students, of whatever nationality, who wish to pursue international journalism, rather than returning to their countries of origin and becoming local reporters. Our program is also heavily oriented toward helping journalists launch their careers rather than assisting mid-career professionals.
